James Schutter joined Newmark Knight Frank as a senior managing director in 2008. Based in the firm's Chicago office, Mr. Schutter focuses primarily on furthering the Midwest Region's retail service platform from a retail landlord's representation prospective. He brings to his position over 28 years of retail brokerage experience and works with a dedicated team of brokers specializing in retail landlord representation and retail-related brokerage services throughout the Chicagoland area, focusing on both urban and suburban properties. Mr. Schutter has represented a wide range of retail property owners, from the entrepreneurial developer to the large institutional owner, including Cargill, Equity Group Investments, GE Capital, Intercontinental Real Estate, Manulife Financial, Marc Realty, Mesa Development and Prudential. He has also completed lease negotiations with a wide variety of retail tenants, from small shops to anchor tenants, including Bank of America, Bed Bath & Beyond, Bob's Furniture, Burlington Coat Factory, Chase, Citibank, Fresh Thyme, Home Depot, Jewel Foods, LA Fitness, McDonald's, Michaels, Panera Bread Company, Sports Authority, Trader Joe's, US Cellular and Walgreens. Additionally, Mr. Schutter has restructured leases with a variety of tenants including Best Buy, Kmart, Office Depot and numerous small retailers. Prior to joining Newmark Knight Frank, Mr. Schutter held the position of vice president at M & J Wilkow, Ltd., where he was responsible for the leasing of a retail portfolio that consisted of over 4 million square feet. He was also in charge of retail brokerage services that encompassed retail tenant representation, retail product leasing, retail lease restructuring and commercial land sales. He started his retail brokerage career at CBRE, where he was a senior associate specializing in all aspects of retail brokerage services. Mr. Schutter holds the CCIM designation from the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute and is a former president of the Illinois CCIM Chapter, a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), a member of the Chicago Loop Alliance and a licensed real estate broker. He is also a 2013 recipient of CoStar's Power Broker award for retail leasing transactions in the Chicago market. Mr. Schutter holds a Master of Business Administration degree in real estate finance from DePaul University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Western Kentucky University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater from Columbia College.
