The historic John Ross House is located right on Head House Square in Philadelphia. Head House Square was built in 1775 is the oldest surviving marketplace in the United States . It is deeply embedded in American History. In 1773 Betsy Ross married her first husband, John Ross at the age of 21. John Ross joined the Pennsylvania militia in January 1776, he was gravely wounded at a Delaware River ammunition cache while standing guard. Betsy nursed him in their home, but he died within days. Although John was unable to see his wife's creation of the American Flag, his memory lives on within this building.
