Tucked just off University Avenue in Rochester’s Neighborhood of the Arts, 4 Elton Street was built in 1911 as a purpose-built printing plant. The presses were heavy enough that the architect poured extra-thick factory floors and even built a sloped, indoor truck ramp so delivery vehicles could back inside to unload rolls of paper and type metal in all seasons. Those industrial bones—soaring ceilings, brick walls, and beefy timber columns—are still visible today, a century after the first sheets rolled off the presses. Today 4 Elton Street hosts a mix of hair, architecture design, and restaurants, continuing a century's long lineage of hands-on craft that began with ink on paper now supports several Rochester entrepreneurs.
