Stonehaus opened it's doors in April of 1991, though it was the first day open, the Stonehaus story runs deep in the history of Tennessee wine making. Stonehaus' winemaker and visionary is known as the "grandfather of Tennessee wine," Fay Wheeler. Instrumental in not only Stonehaus' inception, but Tennessee Wine production through the Wine and Grape Act of 1977. This led to the first licensed winery in Tennessee in 1979. Stonehaus is truly the foundation of wineries in the state. From the humble early days, the grapes were crushed on site in a 3-ton per hour crusher de-stemmer. The grapes were then pressed with 1,500 pound capacity basket presses. Additionally, the wines were bottled by hand. As more wine was produced, Stonehaus needed more space and continued to add to their existing property. Stonehaus now has over 20 labels, is sold throughout the state in grocery and liquor stores.
